I don't have an issue with a death penalty in principle (since I consider a life in prison to be qualitatively similar to a death penalty), but if we're going to spend all that money and public hand wringing on the subject, it's not worth keeping around.

I rather (and this is just my preference) as a society we just don't kill each other. Killing each other will look bad on us when we somday meet alien lifeforms and they question us on our barbarity.
