Saw this as a “thumbnail” screenshot on YouTube. I haven’t watch that video. I think I solved it. It goes like this:
9 = 72
8 = 56
7 = 42
6 = 30
...
3 = ?Have fun!

Indeed! Why do we always have to abuse the poor equality sign in such a bizarre way?
Why not write: We are looking for an operation f such that f(9) = 72, f(8) = 56, ..."?
