In former psychology texts, three levels of impaired human intelligence were classified, with morons being of the highest intelligence, with idiots being defined as those of the lowest intelligence. Idiots were defined as those adults having the mind of a two year-old (or less) child.

The people running Ford give idiots a bad name.

In a burst of serendipity, somebody at Ford actually had an idea...Let's revisit the Explorer idea of a four passenger SUV with a short truck bed. But this time, we'll truck it up a bit while still using unibody construction and FWD. We'll make an inexpensive interior, using manual controls for several things. We'll have a fairly plain exterior with steel wheels to save money. Continuing with the saving money idea, we'll build this compact "truck" in Mexico.

Thus, the $20,000 (sticker price) Ford Maverick was born.

Man, moment, machine. The absolute right vehicle at the right time, at the right price. While not a real body-on-frame truck built for hard work, the Maverick would haul a decent amount of weight and it would tow a light trailer or boat. In short, what 80% or more of what Americans do with a small truck. You could even get a mild AWD version.

Not content to have consumers pay full sticker, have a six months waiting list and pre-sell your entire year model production run, Ford proceeds to bugger the goose laying the golden eggs.

Each year, the Maverick has been met with price increases. Each year, things get a little more upscale and subsequently a little less reliable for the long haul. Gone are the manual controls. Enter the electronic touchscreen for cabin functions. Enter an AWD Hybrid version (the old hybrid was FWD), necessitating a bigger and more costly transmission. Enter two more upscale trim levels, as the XL, XLT and Lariat levels weren't enough.

And the base price is over $6000 more than introduced. The top trim Tremor starts at $40,000.

When people are begging for a new vehicle at a price they can afford, Ford is doing their best to do away with their best value offering.

Maybe calling them idiots is too generous...

Those who cheered as J-6 American prisoners were locked in solitary for 18 months without trial, now suddenly fight tooth and nail for foreign terrorists’ "due process". — Buck Sexton
