This is going to resonate more with voters concerned with the border, if the message is crafted correctly. Maybe no Willie Horton level, but I think the crime, coupled with some of the other high profile crimes committed by illegal aliens, makes for good campaign fodder.

I just watched a documentary on Netflix about a criminal (and the search for him) named Verappan, from Tamil Nadu in India. Managed to evade capture for more than 20 years by living rough in the dense forests.
Koose Munusamy Veerappan[2]3 (18 January 1952 – 18 October 2004) was an Indian poacher, smuggler, domestic terrorist and bandit who was active for 36 years, and kidnapped major politicians for ransom. He was charged with sandalwood smuggling and poaching of elephants in the scrub lands and forests in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. He was wanted for killing approximately 184 people, about half of whom were police officers and forest officials.[5][failed verification] He was also responsible for poaching approximately 500 of the 2000 elephants killed in the peninsular region where he was active[6] and for smuggling ivory worth US$2.6 million (₹16 crore)[6] and about 65 tons of sandalwood[7] worth approximately US$22 million (₹143 crore).[8]
The battle to capture Veerappan cost the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over ₹100 crore.[9]

I watched the first two episodes of "Cowboy Cartel," the story of how Los Zetas were able to launder millions of dollars through the quarter horse racing world.
For those that don't know, Los Zetas are a Mexican gang that used to be Mexican military. They discovered that they could make more money, a LOT more money, by running drugs. The are based in Nuevo Laredo, across the river from Laredo Texas.
Military training, high-power weapons, and a ruthlessness that is unbelievable. What could go wrong?
