There have always been "kingmakers" in US (and world politics). I don't think this is unusual at all.
For example, President Trump still had a tremendous amount of influence in the Republic party after 2021.
President Reagan had influence, etc etc.

He actually wanted to call Obama a 2 bit thug but recalled that perhaps one or two here saw through that thinly veiled euphemism some years ago.

He was one of the last big names to endorse her.
Also the article simply states that ‘Obama got her the vice presidential nod’. Ok. Evidence?
