So basically, they waited for Headboard Harris to build enough momentum that Obama thinks she might be a viable candidate and not a sacrificial lamb. The call was made, terms for the Fourth Administration agreed upon, then Kamala-lama-ding-dong got on her knees (a not unfamiliar position) and kissed the ring.

Considering GWB wrote a letter about "systemic racism in policing" in the Floyd wake, I think it's safe to say that he thinks he knows where the right side of history is, and is comfortable there.
