President Biden just delivered his speech from the Oval Office that was billed as his explaining why he decided to drop out of the presidential race.
But he didn’t really explain anything. This is the closest he came:
In recent weeks it’s become clear to me that I needed to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all merited a second term. But nothing – nothing – can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition.
This, however, doesn’t actually explain the underlying reasons. For weeks he was insisting that he wouldn’t drop out of the race — not unless the Lord Almighty came down and told him to do so. Yet he suddenly flipped like a switch and decided one Sunday afternoon to announce on social media he was bailing on the race.
His words tonight leave the American people to fill in the blanks as to why he needed to drop out to unify his party and why the cause of saving democracy required his exit from the race. The obvious reason is that were he to do so, he’d have to explain that his rapid mental decline left him unable to campaign for reelection, which would then raise further questions about why he doesn’t resign from the presidency. Instead, he just didn’t elaborate, because he knows now that the media have helped Democrats push him out of the way, they will stop reporting on his infirmity.
Speaking of which, he looked weak and out of sorts tonight. He was slurring his words, trying to force his eyes wide open, and struggling to get through his speech on the teleprompter. He has no business remaining as the leader of the free world.

What did they expect?
“I and those close to me have had nagging doubts, but my inner circle, who would rather have a 30% chance of remaining in proximity to power than a 100% chance of not doing so, fed me happy talk about how I beat Trump once and could do it again. This gave me the ammo I needed to push back against any criticism from party elites. Then I peed down my leg on national television and the pressure continued to mount…..”
I mean, yeah, it would have been satisfying to hear, but how realistic is it?

What changed in 3 weeks? I believe it was July 12 where he said that he's in the race to win.
Did someone "lean" on him?
if so, what kind of leverage can they have over POTUS?

It could be something as simple that he himself finally realize that he doesn't have the health/strength/stamina, etc. to try to be President for four more years. Obviously, people were telling him that also but it may have just been self realization.

My Fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease (or whatever).
Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.

Nothing brings out my skepticism like everyone using the same word:
Biden was only in a position to do this "selfless" thing because he'd gone so far down the road of selfishness. He should have declined to run for reelection, back when it would have given other Democrats a fair chance to fight for the nomination. They — whoever they are (Pelosi, Obama, etc.) — prevailed upon him to get out, at long last. And he finally did, perhaps because they said everyone would call him "selfless" if he did and — if he didn't — he'd go down in history as insanely, disastrously selfish.
