In his written note on X, he doesn't give a reason why he's withdrawing from the race.

Perhaps we'll know more later this week?

He better just say something to the effect that he realized he wants to dedicate the next 4 years to his family or some such. Or even just admit that the polls indicate that he won’t win, and beating Trump is too important. If he says anything along the lines of tired or indicates that he realizes he’s too old, it will be unfortunate…

            Obama speaks:

            https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/07/21/joe-biden-drops-out-election/biden-obama-clinton-harris-00170063

Former President Barack Obama endorsed an open Democratic primary process at the convention next month — less than an hour after former President Bill Clinton endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

“I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges,” Obama said in a statement, which did not mention Harris. “I believe that Joe Biden’s vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic Convention in August.”

Earlier Sunday, a joint statement between Clinton and former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton said the two were backing Harris: “Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her.”

Their statements came soon after President Joe Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection and endorsed Harris to replace him at the top of the ticket. Harris announced shortly after that with Biden’s support, she would seek the Democratic nomination.

The Democratic National Convention starts on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Both former presidents Obama and Clinton thanked Biden, who served as Obama’s vice president, for the current president’s service. In his statement, Obama wrote about picking Biden as his running mate and said the president had “every right to run for re-election and finish the job he started.”

“I also know Joe has never backed down from a fight,” Obama wrote. “For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he should pass the torch to a new nominee is surely one of the toughest in his life.”

            "The leaders of our party..."

Democracy dies in smoke tofu-filled rooms.

And I think Biden endorsed Harris specifically as a big FU to Obama, and probably in consultation with the Clintons.

I think he just realized his candidacy for a second term was wholly untenable and would cost the DNC losing its slight majority in the Senate and any hope of even holding its current substantial minority in the House.

                      Oh, yeah.

Imagine endorsing a non-female, non BIPOC. It would doom the Dems.

Juan Williams commented that the endorsement of Harris will bring back the pro-abortion, black segment of the Democrat's voter base.

Not sure if I agree. I think that base would have voted for Biden regardless. No real gain.

A good chance that there exists some residual feelings towards that "articulate guy" for endorsing Clinton over him back in 2016.

If Kamala could have won those voters at all, she wouldn’t have been the first out in 2020.

The single biggest issue driving support for Trump by former non Trump voters is the border. I don’t think the Border Czar is going to do well.

She doesn't have a lot of time to distance herself from Biden on the border issue - along with the baggage the Dems have picked up over the past decade.

I don’t think that he truly internalized that. Ultimately, Obama shut off the fundraising pipeline, and that was that. The Biden team realized they can’t win without money. So there was ultimately no choice. You could interpret that however you want, but that was ultimately forcing him out, just giving him a chance to salvage a modicum of pride.

@George-K said in Biden: “I’m out.”:

                                          So...why did he drop out?

Because his handlers he knew he wouldn't win?

Because his handlers he knew he couldn't handle the job - too old, too sick?

                                          Things I imagine happened...

                                          1. You get to leave with your reputation intact. Since it's evident you're going to lose, a lot of people are going to use a lot of shovels to dig up all the side hustles you've been doing for years, Big Guy.
                                          2. Everybody needs money. We have arranged for certain business deals that will keep you and Jill well funded for the rest of your days.
                                          3. The Party will personally see to your library and your legacy. Hell, we made Truman look good and he left the Whitehouse with a 22 approval rating.
                                          4. You want to pardon Hunter? Here's how we do this with minimal political fallout...
                                          5. If you don't leave and drag the down-ticket into the abyss with you? Well, Joe, we promise you'll be broke, laughed at and what little reputation you have, utterly destroyed.

Do it for the party. Do it for yourself. Do it for America.

                                          But, dammit, just do it!

“Cry havoc and let slip the DOGE of war!”

Those who cheered as J-6 American prisoners were locked in solitary for 18 months without trial, now suddenly fight tooth and nail for foreign terrorists’ "due process". — Buck Sexton
