No it doesn’t. They get to appoint one. I believe the senate has to confirm

Interesting...Rockefeller became Ford's VP by nomination, also.

But what if the House and Senate vote down a nomination? Would the rules of ascension apply?

Then if potus dies SOTH ascends.

Interestingly, John Tyler went almost 4 years without a VP (recall he was elevated to POTUS after Harrison died weeks into his term) because until the 25th amendment was passed there was no provision to select a new one.
