We’re going to make a leisurely California trip in August. A few days in LA, wander up the coast, then a few days in SF.
Any recommendations regarding the middle bit? We’ll stop at Santa Barbara, Morro Bay, Big Sur for sure.
Any where else?
I did the drive just once, in 1993.

Jon - I used to live in Los Osos (right next door to Morro Bay) many moons ago. There is a pretty state park there, Montana de Oro. Also a little inland I hear there are some pretty nice wineries in the Paso Robles area. I love that drive between the Central Coast and Monterey. We visited Hahn Winery just outside Monterey last time we were out there.

Carmel is a nice plane to spend an evening.

Half moon bay has good lobster rolls. I spent a few hours driving into Carmel once. Maybe skip it if it’s a weekend.

Venice, Muscle Beach, the body builder with the yellow python and the guy that drinks lighter fluid then blows flame out of his mouth and usually a few more freaks.
Then the original Muscle Beach up near Santa Monica and the Pier.
What more could a tourist want?
Starting here will make the rest of it a little nicer.

Nepenthe is a good place to eat around Big Sur, right up on the cliffs. Get a reservation if you can.
South to north is the best way to go. Getting a convertible?

We’ll do all that. LA and SF I know pretty well. It’s the middle bits I’m less familiar with.

Cambria is a nice town. Stayed overnight there.
I’ve done that drive a number of years ago, before covid. Came across from Bakersfield (meth was meh) to cambria. Then north up route 1 in two days.

I visited Cambria right before Covid. It’s lovely.
