    Crossbow killings:

    For those that don't keep up with this kind of stuff, 250fps was considered a pretty fast crossbow twenty-five years ago. Now, you can buy a crossbow that shoots 500fps.

    For reference, some .38 spl 158g loads in a short barrel only clock in the high sixes and low seven hundreds.

      Momentum = Mass X Velocity.

      Double the velocity, double the damage.

      The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

        I wonder...With a bow, you depend on your broadhead to cut a large wound. That's why you like broadheads that are razor sharp. A really fast bow helps in range estimation, as the arrow drops less.

        With a handgun round, you depend upon weight and expansion. Handguns do deliver some hydrostatic shock, but not like a rifle. I suspect a good mushroom for a .38 would be about 0.5 inches. The higher the velocity, the more hydrostatic shock and the bigger the mushroom, which is why a .357 magnum is a better deer killer than a .38spl.

        Back to effective range...I suspect a .38 and a good crossbow have about the same effective range in the hands of the average person, which I'm guessing is about 70 yards.

            I was watching this unfold this morning. I got the impression that he'd got inside the house and killed them, so presumably he wasn't shooting them at a distance as they'd have been able to get away. They also said other weapons might have been involved.

            The poor father losing his wife and 2 daughters like this, what a horrendous nightmare.

            I was only joking

              You know, you'd be surprised at some of the new crossbows...You could probably conceal one with a long trench coat.
