I wonder about the context of the quote. More than likely he was responding to the disappearing-up-your-own-asshole approach to lit criticism and not intending to say the story has no meaning outside of its facts.

That was how I read it. I could hear him thinking "I already wrote the goddamn story, now I have to tell you what it means? It means whatever you THINK it means, idiot!"
