A true SUV is body on frame construction, usually a slight modification of an existing truck frame. The engines usually translate from the corresponding truck size.

Typically, an SUV is a vehicle designed to be driven off-road that is primarily used to drive overweight people around the suburbs.

There's a reason they last so long.

Car makers will adapt, probably with improved battery technology, etc.. As @Doctor-Phibes says, most people do not need an SUV. I think they are relatively (recent) invention.

I agree. I dont want the goverment telling me that either, but I think my statement is still true. Most people do not need an SUV. They may "want" one, but they really dont "need" one.
