Buy a 18” x 18” box floor fan. Buy 1900 merv 13 furnace air filter. Tape filter to back (draw) side of fan. Every bit as efficient and effective as a $$$ air purifier. Cost < $80.

Not a bad idea. I wonder how noisy.

IOW, obnoxious. Not something I'd want in the living room of the condo.

Hmmmm, I wouldn’t want to leave it out all the time, but that might not be a bad idea to put out every night with the kittens coming tomorrow. One upstairs and one downstairs…

Sounds like something that might be amenable to a "smart plug" and time it to run after bedtime.

I bought this a few months ago. I think it helps, but I don't have any device to measure air quality.

You can set it to automatically set the fan speed based on air quality. It measures quality Red, Yellow, Green.

It took half a day to go from Red to Yellow to Green. It has been on green since, almost silent. You have to get right up next to it to hear the fan.

I think I do notice less dust.

It's hard to tell. It is good for about 1,000 square feet. And within that area I think it feels better, just going around there seems to be less dust in the areas that get dust.

But like I said It don't have an unbiased measurement.

Does it have to be positioned in a specific location in the room, like central?

                        Would a corner location work?

This is a timely thread! I was planning on a similar thread with the cats coming. We supposedly have a very good new HVAC Filter System with eloctrostatic filters, and it has worked wonders for seasonal alletgies, but I am still concerned with the cats in the house.

We have them in the front room and the bedroom, as Mrs. Phibes has bad allergies and we don't have central air in the new place. She says it makes a difference, I honestly don't see any.

A Bionaire Aer1. In the past we've had Honeywell purifiers. I just go along with it for a peaceful life, TBH.

We only use them when the air quality is above 7 owing to wild fire smoke. Usually for twenty minutes at at time. Two weeks ago the air was dismal (10+), couldn’t see down the block and the smell of smoke was heavy. The smoke rolled in around 5:30 am when all the windows were open. In the house itself we could not smell any smoke after running the two fans with filters in various places throughout the home (2700 sq ft) and basement (1500 sq ft) after about an hour and a half.

I’m actually thinking about it for the bedroom. The cats aren’t supposed to be allowed in there, but that doesn’t mean the dander won’t make it.. Plus, I’m a big fan of circulating air and white noise when I sleep…

Buy a 18” x 18” box floor fan. Buy 1900 merv 13 furnace air filter. Tape filter to back (draw) side of fan. Every bit as efficient and effective as a $$$ air purifier. Cost < $80.

Hmmmm, I wouldn’t want to leave it out all the time, but that might not be a bad idea to put out every night with the kittens coming tomorrow. One upstairs and one downstairs…

It’s a brilliantly simple idea, and due to the fan size, is likely much more powerful than any of these more expensive systems. It’s close to being a secondary HVAC filtration system. They would be a little too loud to use generally during the day, but at night in the areas the cats are at during the day? And if the cat dander is a little too much for me, taking one to my retreat could be very helpful.
