Former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson was turned away from his local polling station after forgetting to bring acceptable photo ID.
As first reported by Sky News, he returned later with the necessary ID and was able to vote.
He cast his ballot in South Oxfordshire, where voters are choosing a police and crime commissioner.
New rules requiring photo ID to vote were introduced by Mr Johnson's government in the Elections Act 2022.
The change was rolled out last year, with local elections in May 2023 the first time voters needed to show ID.

I've never felt particularly strongly about this topic. It seems to me that both the people who go on incessantly about widespread voter fraud and those talking about disenfranchising groups from voting are hugely exaggerating the problem.
Politicians are assholes, IOW. Then again, the UK probably doesn't really have the same history that the US does regarding voter suppression (alleged and/or real), so it's probably less of a hot topic.

You needed some exposure to the Long Machine. I've seen four votes bought for a new pair of rubber boots. Uncle Earl once said if you gave him some rubber bands and paper clips, he could make a voting machine play Dixie.

I don't really have a problem with voter ID. It's just that if you listen to some, there's a massive fraud going on, but no hard evidence of it taking place ever really shows up. Everybody has a story about somebody's friend who knows all these illegals who vote. Obviously, it happens, it's bound to. But the idea that these inner city areas are all suddenly going to start electing Republicans is a bit comical.
What the alderman did isn't illegal, is it? It's one-on-one campaigning (a/k/a bribery). I knew people in England who used to travel around and drive people to the polling station. You could argue this is trying to influence their vote, because the people who do the driving are all affiliated with a party, and it was pretty obvious which one.

Now, some jurisdictions are claiming that, in addition to the right to own a firearm, get free-ish health insurance, illegal aliens (there, I said it) are to be given the right to vote.

By whom?
I actually think that allowing permanent residents to vote, at least in local elections, wouldn't be such a bad idea at all. After all, we're allowed to own guns, drive cars, pay taxes, claim social security etc. Well, strictly speaking we're not 'allowed' to pay taxes, more like 'required'.
