Las Vegas then and now

That fountain is right in front of the Bellagio. The girlfriend and I had a great view of it during one of our dinners. This was Tuesday night.

Bellagio fountains are great… I am so disappointed that Treasure Island is no longer offering the pirate show.

My one pure gambling and debauchery trip I stayed at the Riviera. The Riviera was absolutely fantastic for what it was. I actually hit pretty good, so ate at the top tier steakhouse, took a helicopter ride from the roof, and saw a young Jeff Dunham.
Mid 2000s, I won a trip with Yamaha to see Elton John The Red Piano at Caesars. Caesars was okay, but different levels of debauchery as a young married guy with a 3-4 year old at his fathers… Still, we got to a lot of great shows. Blew $500 in blackjack, but a lot less of general debauchery.
The worst was a Roland training held at The Strat. Work trip, by myself. No drbauchery. Couldn’t afford to lose any cash. And there was flooding in Vegas, preventing any travel up the strip.

Water.
Where does all the water come from?
I attended a keynote luncheon presentation a dozen or so years ago by the Head of the Las Vegas Water Authority on water use in Las Vegas. It was very interesting to learn how the city manages and conserves water. In the case of the fountains they cycle from the grey water (can’t recall whether or not it went through a primary treatment process beforehand) in the Bellagio and other adjacent hotels that accumulates in underground storage tanks. I just forget how many cycles the water goes through in the fountains before going for final treatment. It is a complex system and despite all appearances very little of the water is lost to evaporation.

I saw that also same time period. I wasn’t a big fan of the huge homoerotic video backdrop.

Another thing that’s changed, people dress like shit now, even at night. I might have been one of 2-3 guys wearing a jacket in the upscale restaurants we were in last week.
Guys were dressed like they were going bowling, even when the girl with them was dressed nicely.

Yup. Commander's Palace in New Orleans
used to havehas a dress code for "gentlemen."https://www.commanderspalace.com/reservations.html
- Business Attire
- Jackets are preferred for gentlemen
- Collared shirts and closed-toed shoes required for gentlemen
- No shorts, flip-flops, t-shirts, sweat shirts or sweat pants
- Jeans are discouraged; ripped jeans are not allowed
The photos of people traveling used to show every man in a jacket with a necktie.
They were skinny too...

Okay, so the Yamaha thing was the top 7-10 Disklavier salespeople (I’ve always done well with Disklavier. When you get your 230VC, it will have a Disklavier system on it…) and the dealer principal would win a 4 day trip to Vegas and tickets for the show and a reception with Elton. So Karla and I traveled to Vegas with the owner of the company, Buddy Parker and his wife, Peggy. Wonderful man, think @Jolly blended with Joe Gibbs.
So at the show, I see the giant inflatable banana and cherries, lean over to Buddy, a Southern Baptist, and ask “Hey buddy, are you sure that you and Peggy are going to be okay with this? Elton might be a little risqué . He responds “ oh, we’ve seen Elton at Madison Square Garden, this will be wonderful.” I responded “Buddy, this is Vegas. Moreso. This is Elton IN Vegas. This may be a little different…”
He and Peggy almost had a heart attack when the banana started ejaculating glitter. And when the the video had the angel with the sparklers up her wahoo? They were done.

You should have visited one of the buffets…
The steak place at the Riviera was maybe the best restaurant that I have ever been to. The meal for the girl of the moment and myself was ~$400, and there was a 50% tip. Well deserved as well.

For a $600 meal, you should have gotten blued, screwed and tattooed.
At least twice.
Well yeah…

That’s the Italian place i believe. We ate there at Christmas.

Yep. Lago. I was lucky to get the patio on a few hours notice. Though to do so I had to guarantee 150 per person minimum. When they handed me the wine list, I started at the bottom and worked my way up.

Was only in Vegas once to attend a Mining Show and Conference. Stayed at the Luxor. Couldn’t get used to the angled outer wall. Each time I went over to look out the window I would bang my head on the glass.
Neat place though but not sure that I would ever go back. The highlight for me was driving out to Valley of Fire State Park the day before returning home. That was truly something to behold and experience.

I used to say I’d never go because gambling didn’t interest me.
Then my old work buddies started an annual reunion usually there, though very occasionally in other cities.
They go for a week and golf every day and have outrageously expensive dinners every night.
Since I don’t golf, I go for just a couple days. I’ve grown to enjoy the trips.
