The Perfect Gin and Tonic?

I've been doing a bit of cutting-edge research during lockdown, monkeying around with different options for gin and tonic, which I love. I've borrowed from martini recipes and then added tonic.
Yesterday, I reckon I made the best one I've ever tasted....
2 ounces tanqueray gin
~1/4 ounce dry vermouth
A few drops of Angostura orange bitters
~ 4-5 ounces of Fever Tree tonic water, but other decent tonic would work
IceHoly crap, it was delicious. I may be forced to conduct additional research tonight.

I've never explored gin, being "Murrican" and all.
Nor tequila.
I'll venture off into bourbons every now and then - there's a very nice distillery here in town that's walking distance from the condo.
So, if I were to start "researching" gin, how do you recommend I begin?

Basic research is to try Bombay and Beefeaters to see if you prefer a bite or not in your gin.
Thanks! I'll look into those, perhaps get a small-ish bottle of each to try.
The tonic gives it sweetness and I think keeps malaria away.
I'm stocked with HCQ, so that's not a problem.

I wouldn't bother with Beefeaters, personally. I think Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray are easily the nicest mainstream gins.
I've heard Plymouth gin is nice, too, but I've never tried it.
Last time I was in the UK, there were a shit-ton of different options, though. It's become very fashionable.

I was just going to ask - there's a great variety of Scotch whiskey and bourbons here in the US. One can really fine-tune what they like. Is it the same for gin? Tequila seems to have a pretty wide spread of choices as well. I sampled some tequila at a local liquor store and it was heavenly - smooth, no bite....

I don’t like Tanquery for some reason. I feel beefeaters is the most authentic to the name and Bombay is smooth like boodles.
Later you can waste some money on good Hendricks.
Tequila, I only like in Margaritas. Rum I don’t like either unless mixed. I used to be a scotch guy but bourbon ruined that. bourbon’s I know best.
