It's funny, I'd read a lot of the Bosch books, but Mrs. Phibes was the one who got completely addicted to the TV series.

Not familiar with the Ballard character, but looking forward to the new series.
Those books are fun. In those books, Bosch is retired. Ballard was exiled to the late show because her sleazy captain made a pass at her and she filed a complaint. Her thing is that she knows a lot of cases she catches just get handed over to the daytime detectives who halfass them, so she kinda works on them off the books, sometimes with Bosch's help.
She also lives in a van by the beach and is kinda big into surfing and paddleboarding. From what I remember, I think she's from Hawaii.
Desert Star is a book with both of them in it.
