I’ve never seen chained shopping carts. How do customers use them?

They are chained together with coin operated locks. You piut your quarter in the slot and it releases your cart. When you return the cart, you stick the lock in it and it gives you your quarter back. I really hated them at first but came to appreciate them.

    @Mik

I really hated them at first but came to appreciate them.

My cousin’s husband was in the grocery store business for over 40 years. A butcher by trade, he worked his way into management and worked all over British Columbia over those years. He told me that the chain and coin locks were not so much to deter theft but to provide customers an incentive to keep the parking lots tidy and free of carts in the way of traffic. Shopping centre property management companies and grocery store head offices were fed up with all the complaints and petty claims they were receiving for vehicle damage caused by loose carts in parking stalls and scattered all over the lots and public areas adjacent to the parking lot.

    Elbows up!

In the other hand, in my youth I would have considered the exchange of a quarter for an entire shopping cart to be a great deal! I never would have stolen one, but buy it for a quarter? You bet!

Or you could offer to return the cart for little old ladies.

        $0.25 all profit, tax free.

I grew up in a small city in British Columbia - we had chained shopping carts.

It's really sad how Carlson has gone off the rails.

Gotta wonder how much of it is just an act and he's trying to get clicks/views.

I only took notice of him a couple years ago. I thought then he was already a yellow journalist train wreck. Nothing has changed except more rail cars have piled up behind him..

We now have more than 11 million of these criminals here.

Making the case that we should stop this is good, not bad.

He's got an agenda. I find it interesting that other people seem to be teetering around buying into his bullshit.

Maybe if he saw the prices in Mexican supermarkets he'd start praising their culture too!

Some of us don't spend very many brain cycles second guessing whether we're buying into various bullshit, because some of us don't buy much of anything to begin with, at face value. This directly translates to being unafraid of hearing people out with what they have to say.

                                    Education is extremely important.

I have no opinion either way what FuCa has to say about the alleged invasion from south of the Rio Grande or elsewhere.

I do however have an opinion about how FuCa reports about issues that are happening beyond US borders and policies mouthed from US politicians that might or do impact the country I live. On both those counts he qualifies at best as a toad of a person in the guise of a yellow journalist.

                                        Elbows up!

I'm able to understand him in non-Manichean terms, and I often appreciate his voice. I get that good vs evil perspectives are important, and my wording triggered that. I don't see any easy, coherent way to consider him to be bought and paid for. He goes off the rails sometimes, but I attribute to stupidity what others may attribute to malice.
