I worked with a nurse who did some travel work. She spent time (a year?) in Bethel Alaska. That town is inaccessible other than by water or air. Everything had to be ferried or flown in.

It paid great, but was remote as hell, and expensive as well.

    And the people were...interesting.

Not much different than in Nunavut and other northern towns here.

Do Alaskan residents living north of 60 receive a northern living allowance tax deduction or credit to help offset the remoteness and high cost of living there?

I saw a documentary about a Candian company that runs a chain of "supermarkets" in the north remote regions of Canada. Cant remember the name. Maybe @Renauda would know what it was.

Anyway, it was interesting the logistics of keeping these stores supplied with stuff, especially "fresh" food,

In '98, a gallon of milk in Kuujjuaq was over $9, Canadian.

Wow, the thread got me curious so I looked a few things up.

Housing is crappy and expensive ($300K for a double wide https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/114-Atsaq-St-Bethel-AK-99559/2057361679_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare )

And there’s no corresponding increase in pay rates…

Yeah, that's kind of weird. Engineers are pulling in less than $100K. I go to this committee twice a year that visits around the US, and they keep threatening to have us spend a week in Anchorage. I have no idea why we would want to do that, particularly since we meet in October and February/March.

                      I was only joking
