    Well here’s a wild case:

Guy goes in for a stress test.

Rad tech helps him up on the table.

Patient (very obese) says… you sure this will hold me?

Tech says yeah, it’s held people plenty bigger!

    Table collapses.

Patient suffers horrific series of complications including stroke and brain abscess.

They sued the cardiologist who ordered it, and the rad tech.

    Verdict:
Cardiologist - not negligent: pays $0
Rad tech - negligent: $7,000,000 damages awarded.

I wonder what the cardiologist's defense cost.

Wonder how much it would cost to reinforce every piece of furniture in a medical facility to hold 1000 pounds and have that rating certified.

I think I found the actual case:

        https://www.yahoo.com/news/couple-wins-9-million-trial-100000897.html

Plymouth couple was awarded $9 million, which will total more than $14 million including interest, in a lawsuit they brought after a nuclear imaging table collapsed under the man, causing him serious injuries.

James and Diana Griswold sued Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists of Bridgeport and Dr. Michael Logue, a cardiologist and partner with the group. The suit was filed in Superior Court in Waterbury.

According to the complaint, James Griswold went to Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists on July 1, 2014, for a nuclear stress test. At the time he weighed 340 pounds.

Griswold “expressed concern … as to whether or not the imaging table could support his weight without failing,” the suit states. Another defendant and other staff members told him the table could support his weight and “that he should not tell her/them how to do her/their job(s),” it states.

Once Griswold got onto the table, according to the suit, “the table made a loud popping noise, and the head of the table fell to the floor with sudden force and violence, causing Mr. Griswold to suffer injury.”

He suffered injuries to his back, neck and spine, according to the lawsuit. He underwent three surgeries, after which Griswold suffered septic emboli, which led to a stroke, brain abscess and/or other serious neurological injuries, the suit states.

The lawsuit contends that Logue and other physicians are responsible for Griswold’s injuries because they ordered the test without “clinical indicators to do so.”

As a result of his injuries, Griswold has suffered serious weakness and problems to his right side and right arm, severe infections, pneumonia, kidney failure, hallucinations, changes to his mental status and partial loss of feeling in his tongue, according to the lawsuit.

He has also suffered edema in his legs, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and expressive aphasia, the suit states. His functional mobility is permanently impaired, it states.

He is unable to walk independently, carry out activities of daily living and has lost more than 100 pounds, according to the lawsuit. It states he has incurred major expenses.

The suit accuses the defendants of negligence and carelessness.

Griswold was awarded $3 million in economic damages and $4 million for pain and suffering. Diana Griswold was awarded $2 million for loss of consortium.

The Griswolds were represented by Silver Golub & Teitell of Stamford.

“We’re pleased that the jury rejected the attacks on Mr. and Mrs. Griswold during the trial and recognized the defendants’ responsibility for causing Mr. Griswold’s terrible injuries,” partner Joaquin Madry said.

Partner Nicole Coates added, “We are so proud to represent Mr. and Mrs. Griswold. Of course, we wish they never had to endure the stress of this trial, but we’re gratified that the jury carefully considered the evidence, understood all the issues, and recognized the seriousness of Mr. Griswold’s injuries.”

The defendants were represented by Heidell, Pittoni, Murphy & Bach of Bridgeport. A request for comment was not immediately returned.

From another site: "The jury last week ruled that (tech) Giannelli was responsible for 100 percent of the Griswolds’ damages, while (Cardiologist) Logue was responsible for none, according to the verdict form."

How does anyone expect to collect $7 million from someone on a rad tech’s wages?

Secondly, what if the rad tech finds work outside the US and emigrates never to return.

              Question answered. Move along.

              Elbows up!
