If it will help to interpret my point charitably, you might concede the political polarization of our culture and the huge numbers of people who will full stop not share space with those who are on the opposite side of the issues they find to be of extreme moral or existential importance.

Dinners or parties or walking groups or workplace or family interactions. I guess you can claim that such interactions aren't precarious as they edge into politics or social issues, I mean you can write that if you want.
Education is extremely important.

I've had business meals where people started going off about politics. One guy I was meeting just before the 2016 election said Hillary was a communist, and I'm ashamed to say I LOL'd. I was definitely in the minority at that particular meeting as my boss is a Trump sympathiser, however he clearly saw the funny side. The other guy, not so much, but he'd already made me sit through grace before dinner, so I figured enough was enough.

If I understand that back and froth between @Horace and @jon-nyc , I think I agree with Jon a bit more.
I meet quite a few people I have not met before, and it is pretty easy to have a good conversation with them without moving into topics that would be a controversy.

Yeah, I know there are plenty of knobheads out there. I generally find that self-deprecating jokes are a good way to diffuse the tension.
And for any Trump supporters out there, self-deprecating is a fancy way of saying laughing at yourself.

I agree that one can navigate waiters at restaurants without getting into a heated debate about global warming.
