    @Jolly

All for it, although in case you didn’t know, this thread was actually about car thefts in the Greater Toronto Area not Bill C-63.

Didn’t read your link. Not interested in what the NY Post prints about any issue or topic pertaining to this country or outside the US. Slick American tabloid crap. But you already knew that.

Nah, just pointing out the progression of Canadian law. You can go fuck yourself for all I care. You are a bitter asshole and if you're not a drunk, start drinking. Heavily.

It might help your outlook on life.

Without legal protection, how do we protect children from online abuse?

Because that's what C-63 is about, from my understanding.

        https://www.techpolicy.press/an-overview-of-canadas-online-harms-act/

"The Bill targets seven kinds of harmful content, three of which are specific to children:

content that sexually victimizes a child or revictimizes a survivor,
content used to bully a child, and
content that induces a child to harm themselves.
        The four other harms are:

        intimate content communicated without consent,
        content that foments hatred,
content that incites violent extremism or terrorism, and
        content that incites violence."

I'm not sure I really understand the comparisons to Orwell.

        I was only joking

I think here is the crux of the concern...Who dictates what engenders hatred? Why do the penalties include imprisonment for life?

I think those are questions worthy of discussion.

I regret to inform you, but articles in the NY Post and coffee and donut shop gossips like you, do not “point out” to me or anyone the progression of Canadian law. Ostensibly you know your real intent was something other than pointing out or simply informing. So stop trying make candy out of a turd.

If you wish to have a real conversation about bill C 63 then at least look at the facts and use credible source material as a basis for your discussion. Here are two fairly decent moderately conservative sources with which you can start:

            https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/liberals-harmful-online-content

            https://www.readtheline.ca/p/jen-gerson-this-briefing-did-not?r=17wfy3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&triedRedirect=true

So rather than constantly trying to evangelise your peculiar pseudo-conservative agenda on to others with folksy anecdotes, common gossip and sloppy thinking when called out, do some actual research beyond tabloid media and other dubious web sources, into topics; especially those that are unfolding beyond your borders.

When you start that we can then begin a rational conversation on pretty much anything. Until then I’ll continue to call out your gossip and hubristic bullshit as I see fit.

People in San Francisco leave their cars unlocked so that there's no smashing of windows to steal what might be in them. Some even put a sign indicating that the trunk is unlocked...

There’s something to that. I recall a proverb of sorts, that states “locks only keep honest people from breaking in and stealing another’s property”.

Booby traps for criminals. I like it. A friend of mine from Calgary worked in Yekaterinburg for four years in 1990’s and rented a second floor apartment with an open balcony. There was a problem with night break ins in the complex with burglars gaining access from the balconies. His solution was to go down to the local market and buy some glass insulators, bare heavy gauge wire and a male plug. He ran the wire along the top of metal balcony railing through the insulators and would plug into the 220 v / 5 amp AC outlet in the adjacent room. No burglars ever bothered him.

Yes, material poverty can account for a part of it. Likewise the absence of anything resembling a civilized culture.

However, systemic racism no more exists than does Islamophobia. Both are conjured myths beloved of academics and left wing populists to affect emotions and radical change. The fact is that neither have any basis or measurability in reality.

So best to leave the root cause at poverty in all its social dimensions

Saying this sort of thing out loud would get someone fired or at least reprimanded in 1000s of mainstream workplaces out there.

Currently my company-controlled computer lock screen has a picture of a female of color in a lab coat peering intently at a test tube, with a caption about how the business vows to increase minority representation to some percent in the next five years.

Our CEO just announced they'd appointed two executives to head up the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion task force. I couldn't help noticing that they were both middle-aged white-guys.

                                      I was only joking

Our HR VP, a white female, led the creation of our DEI department. The department itself was initiated under the leadership of a black female, as I would bet money yours will be too. The HR VP, in introducing the DEI head, said that in their initial phone conversation, the DEI head was so amazing that the HR VP wanted to jump through the phone to hire her. Two years into the creation of our DEI department, all I can say for sure is that they spam my inbox with announcements about this or that day or month celebrating this or that minority culture. We haven't had a big minority day celebration since the first one, which I wrote about here. It was purportedly about all minorities, and speeches were given by guest speakers about the black experience and the gay experience. But when it came time for employee presentations about their own life journeys, it was a bunch of gay white guys weeping about how childhood was difficult, but now that they're a VP of a big company, life is better. But definitely people are still getting murdered for being gay, and we shouldn't forget that, because they never forget that.

I can relate, now that I've been the target of death threats.

                                        Education is extremely important.

However, systemic racism no more exists than does Islamophobia. Both are conjured myths beloved of academics and left wing populists to affect emotions and radical change. The fact is that neither have any basis or measurability in reality.

                                          I don’t dispute that.

I anticipate that it will soon change and this present silliness will be a thing of the past. Reality will make it so.

Colour me optimistic about the future.
