Turns out that after Jefferson, everyone mailed it in until 1913.

President Thomas Jefferson abandoned that practice (in-person) in 1801, in favor of a written message.

It took more than 100 years for a president to again deliver their message in the form of a speech before Congress. President Woodrow Wilson revived the speech, still known as the Annual Message, in 1913.

Presidents swung between personal appearances and written messages until they mostly began adhering to the in-person tradition after President Franklin D. Roosevelt did so in 1934.

“I will correct, in rapid response, any and all inaccurate Statements, especially pertaining to the Border and his Weaponization of the [Department of Justice], FBI, [attorney generals], and District Attorneys, to go after his Political Opponent, ME (something never done before in this Country!),” Trump continued. “We did this once before to tremendous success – Beating All Records. It is important for the Country to get the TRUTH!”
