I'm going to bite the bullet and get one of his books as I'm traveling.

Is Revelation Space the best place to start?

    I was only joking

      No.

THere's so much backstory to the RS universe that starting with Revelation Space might be confusing.

Though it's the first book written, it's in the middle of the storyline.

If you're looking for a long read, start with "The Prefect" (or also titled "Aurora Rising"). It sets the stage for what happens 200 years later.

However, for a fuller understanding, you might want to look at some of the prequel short stories.

Here's a timeline of the books (it doesn't include the last of the "Prefect" series or the latest in the "Revelation Space" series, but it's a start.

"Chasm City" is a good standalone book, but it is rife with references to other books.

Another standalone, not part of the Revelation Space series is "House of Suns."

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

I see he's also written a Doctor Who book, Harvest of Time. As I'm a life-long Whovian, that might be worth a look

The first 5 are short stories, but they set the scene. If you're just going to jump in, do "The Prefect" first.

OK, thanks - it's hilarious that he calls an area The Glitter Band, presumably named after one of the cheesiest British products of 1970's glamrock.

Not quite - I have the Dune series to complete, and I also just went out and bought a book on jazz harmony for some inexplicable reason.
