It's not a popular position in the NFL. Payton and Shanahan use one, but the Shanahan system uses a beefier guy, so the Saints must upgrade due to the Kubiak hire.

Need a big back that can block, preferably a rookie that can be obtained in the fourth round or so (no big demand for fullbacks).

In recent years, most fullbacks have been converted from other positions. The Steeler fullback in the 2012-2019 period, Roosevelt Nix came to camp as a Linebacker and the staff converted him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_Nix_(fullback)

We were experimenting with a guard at last camp https://apnews.com/article/pittsburgh-steelers-nfl-mike-tomlin-810d7299bb2e628206ee7a744d9863b4

Ultimately, we called Connor Heyward a fullback, though he was more of an H-Back or TE. Now that we have Arthur Smith as OC, we’re expecting that Fullback will make a return. Smith hardly ever runs 3-4 wide… He almost always runs heavier sets. 12 or 13 personnel… The question is whether they will ask Connor to put on the poundage to become a true FB or whether they will bring in somebody else. I’m hoping they keep Heyward, but don’t force him to put on too much weight. He plays heavier than he is in the blocking game, but also is an okay receiver…

We also have a unique opportunity since our “scatback” plays like a FB and loves to hit people…

I tend to think that we could run some interesting combos using Warren or Heyward in lieu of the bruising FB and be fine.
