I have visited the islands of Kinmen and Matsu, which are owned by Taiwan but are within site of mainland China.

(The remained under martial law for long after it ended in mainland Taiwan)

Anyway, during my visit, I met a group of French men who were in charge of clearing un-exploded bombs and mines that were still on the beaches. Interesting to hear them talk about it, but not a job I would want.

My wife 's uncle did two combat tours in Vietnam, taking care of unexploded munitions and bomb disposal. Nary a scratch.
