From the article:
“I’ve consistently felt that when society and government tries to define what is or is not a family, we’ve historically done a very poor job of doing so,” said Davis. “It hasn’t gone well, and it’s not a business that government should be in, so that guided my thinking on this.”
Get the government out of the business of defining "family".

And celebrate the destruction of one of the most successful societies the world has ever seen.

I love my wife. I mean totally, unconditionally, in every way she is THE only woman on the face of the earth as far as I'm concerned. Every single thing, no matter how small and insignificant it is, she gives me. She is not only my wife, she's my best friend. I cannot even begin to see myself having enough time, attention, or love to give to another person.
Secondly, even if I did have a little of me left to give someone else i couldn't do such a thing to her emotionally. This is yet another hammer swing at the family unit. You simply cannot love two people at the same time in a relationship. If you think you can, you don't know what love is, and the only person you love is yourself.

Yeah, the therapists are going to be twisted in knots over this. I’d love to see the American Psychological Association weigh in on this one.

No, it's fine. No problemo, if they love each other. Better yet, if they can find a consenting dog. Or a cat. Amazing what a cat can do with its tongue.
Only thing missing is a Shetland pony.
I'm sure the children will be perfect little darlings, well-adjusted and ready to take their plAce in Ax's society...

What does it even mean for Sommerville to ‘recognize’ a particular arrangement as a family?
The state sets all relevant family law.
If it were my town, I think the significance would be limited to who is covered by a family membership at the town pool.

Being the hinge person is all you need to know.

Governments should get out of the business of defining marriage or partnership. In my opinion, the "government" side of marriage should simply be a contract between adults. Every group of adults can make a common contract.
But for "family" it is less clear. There's the biological reality of parenthood, which requires a father and a mother. There are children, which may require some kind of protection by the government. A government needs to say something about these things whether it wants to or not.
