    Cruel and unusual...

The judge said the prison's plan to use a single drug, pentobarbital, could cause pulmonary edema, producing a sense that the condemned men were drowning.

      That's BS.

Ive been in the room with several dogs being put down with phenobarb. It was the most peaceful, nondramatic event I have ever witnessed and never a hint of an issue.. Not that it wasn’t heartbreaking.

Ask vets what the risk is.

(nitpik - it's pentobarbital not phenobarbital)

Vets use pentobarbital, iirc, for most euthanasias.

Can it cause pulmonary edema? Yes, all barbiturates are cardiac depressants, but on the list of side effects to worry about, it's way, way down on the list.

But in all cases, if it were to occur, it would happen long after unconsciousness ensued, and if they're planning on using lethal doses to induce apnea, it's a non-issue.

I'd love to see the judge's references for this.

            Waiting for SCOTUS right now....

            ETA...

Among the arguments is that this injection can be the cause of "pain."

Nope. Pentobarbital does not cause pain. It causes unconsciousness, and in sufficient doses, causes respiratory arrest.

I'm not defending capital punishment here, I'm simply pointing out that the arguments against this method are totally wrong.

              Choot 'em

Lee and the other plaintiffs argued that execution by firing squad could be considered an alternative that would "significantly reduce the risk of severe pain," pointing to studies that have shown a competent shooting causes near-instant death and firing squads have the lowest rate of "botched" executions of any method of execution conducted since 1900.

Easier to find pentobarbitol than bullets right now.

Having spoken with people and seen experiences of people who are gassed with nitrogen, that seems to be the most humane. From my understanding, there is absolutely no indication that anything is happening. One guy I know was in Indonesia working - went into a tower that had nitrogen. He told me that one moment, evenrthing was normal, and the next thing he knew, he woke up in a hospital in Singapore (where they airlifted him).

Fortunately, he recovered completely. A second guy went in after him when he collapsed, and he also collapsed. A third guy was smart enough to stick an air hose into the tower which saved both the guys lives.

(Kind of weird and creepy to talk about this, but seems like a pretty painless way to die)

Executions can (and did) continue after US Supreme Courts says it is okay

                    Federal Executions Are Okay

I've said this before, but if you're going to execute somebody you shouldn't dress it up to look like a medical procedure in order to make yourself feel better about what you're doing. You need to be honest about what is going on.

                      I was only joking

                        Right.

If the execution is intended to discourage criminal behavior, go ahead and discourage it.

Way more people die of the flu every year, so I doubt it's having much of an impact.
