I first became aware of him in about 1974 when I heard the play-by-play performance of the Beethoven 5th symphony.

I too was introduced to PDQ Bach in mid ‘70’s by a grad student from whom I was taking harmony lessons. Not only great fun but an excellent way of teaching an appreciation of the various styles of the classical genre.
Last night there was tribute to the late maestro on a local radio station. They played his clarinet quartet. Pretty solid music as far as my ear is concerned:
