Quote of the day

“So the final conclusion would surely be that whereas other civilizations have been brought down by attacks of barbarians from without, ours had the unique distinction of training its own destroyers at its own educational institutions, and then providing them with facilities for propagating their destructive ideology far and wide, all at the public expense. Thus did Western Man decide to abolish himself, creating his own boredom out of his own affluence, his own vulnerability out of his own strength, his own impotence out of his own erotomania, himself blowing the trumpet that brought the walls of his own city tumbling down, and having convinced himself that he was too numerous, labored with pill and scalpel and syringe to make himself fewer. Until at last, having educated himself into imbecility, and polluted and drugged himself into stupefaction, he keeled over--a weary, battered old brontosaurus--and became extinct.”
― Malcolm Muggeridge

"Muggeridge was described as having predatory behaviour towards women during his BBC years. He was described as a "compulsive groper", reportedly being nicknamed "The Pouncer" and as "a man fully deserving of the acronym NSIT—not safe in taxis". His niece confirmed these reports, while also reflecting on the suffering inflicted on his family and saying that he changed his behaviour when he converted to Christianity in the 1960s."
He used to be on TV a lot when I was a kid telling us all how to behave. My dad said that Muggeridge lived a high old life of wanton dissolution, only becoming reformed as he became too old to do it anymore. Which is presumably also how battered old brontosauri behaved

And WTF does that have to do with the original quote?

Absolutely nothing at all. Incidentally, MM famously described The Life of Brian as a 10th rate film. Presumably me pointing out that piece of blasphemy will also irritate you.
I think my real point was that as a Briton growing up in the 70's I had to suffer quite a bit of getting lectured by Mr. Muggeridge, and it left a bit of a mark.
