ive always kept money in S & P index linked mutual funds for many years, without ever really checking on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis. every once in a while i check the balances.
so this front page (nytimes.com ) headline caught my eye

According to these guys, using CPI data (which I think may undershoot actual inflation) it's about 18%.
