In the US you are obligated to pay income taxes throughout the year. For wage earners this is handled by the employer through withholding taxes which the employer remits to the IRS.

If you exclusively have non-wage income or a material amount relative to your wage income, you must compute an estimated tax and pay it four times a year.

The dates are odd - April 15, June 15, September 15, and Jan 15. It moves a day or two later if it’s a weekend or holiday.

Got it. No different than here. We just call them quarterly instalments. Been there done that.
