      Thanks TG.

The ENT guy today showed me a fun trick. If I plug my nose and blow, I can make air come out my ear hole. But he still couldn't find the hole, because of what is apparently a fungal infection rather than bacterial. The word he used was "angry", to describe my inner ear. Now I have to keep it dry for the next few weeks until my follow up. Didn't really get a solid idea of the prognosis, but my hearing continues to be muted. And then there's the hole.

      Education is extremely important.

Ouch. Hope it heals quickly, Horace.

Tympanic membrane rupture will heal once the infection is cleared.

          Fungus? That's new to me.

The Valsalva maneuver, if you were a pilot you would know this.

              Ahem....

Actually, a Valsalva maneuver is when you close your throat and bear down, like with a hard BM. It can have profound cardiovascular effects (less blood returns to the heart, so less goes out and syncope can result).

When you say "Valsalva" to a doc, that's what they usually are talking about.

In the context of ENT, it's similar, but you're allowing pressure to build in the upper airway.

I learnt that trick as a kid. An air steward taught it to me on my first ride on an airplane. But I only learn the name "Valsalva" today.

Had an interesting experience with the anti fungal ear drop this morning. I massaged it in there and immediately tasted the medicine at the back of my throat, just like the antibiotic. But then several seconds later, and for the next few minutes, I got intense ear pain. Haven’t had that level of pain since I woke up from my latest quadriceps repair surgery. Definitely not how it’s supposed to feel. I’m thinking ear holes are not ok with this med. I’ll call the ENT when they’re open on Tuesday.

The pain was 70% worse than childbirth.

10% worse than the box in Dune the kid had to put his hand in.
