They say it's not a hybrid, and I guess by the standard definition it isn't. But still, it reminds me of the Tesla I saw with a gas generator on a trailer hitch package shelf.

I know some cars are like this, but not with that high a electric range. So, if you are doing errands around town and are driving maybe 40 miles total, you would be on full electric. If you go for a longer trip, then the gasoline engine would start up.

We are just seeing more experiments with different electric-to-fossil fuel ratios in the market place.
Let X be the range that can be driven on a full charge on pure electricity.
Let Y be the range that can be driven if you also throw in a full tank of fossil fuel.
Play with different ratios of X:Y and see which ratios "win" in the market place.

In a newer hybrid, I also see this feature: there is a button that you can push to tell the car "don't use the gas engine, just use the battery." Of course that button is effective only if the battery is charged beyond certain treshhold and the gas engine will still kick in when the battery charge gets too low. But it's an interesting experiment nonetheless. I can see one driving a short trip from A to B, get the battery charged up along the way, then on the return trip from B to A, push that button and goes "electric only" and pretend one is driving an EV. :man-shrugging:

Most driving I think is probably pretty short trips. I guess that if you had a battery that lasted 40-50 miles, that would probably be 65% or more of most trips for most people.

            More like 95% for most.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

              Chevy Volt.

Great concept. GM just didn't deliver a good enough car.
