Went to the cover of WaPo and saw three headlines, all good news for Dems. I figured there must be some that went the other way, so rather than digging deeper there, I go over to Fox News.

The headline at Fox is “GOP Hopes Crushed as Republicans Suffer Loss After Loss in Bellwether Election”.

1. Abortion. It's still an effective wedge issue, especially among young women.
2. Turn-out. Dems do a better job.
3. System & Media. In many places, ballot harvesting is legal and so are unrequested mail-in ballots. Combined with a Dem-driven media, it enhances the couch potato vote.

No, VA was primarily driven by the proposed 15 week Abortion ban. You know, the one that matches France and most liberal western nations. We need to have abortions all the way through birth like Russia, China, etc…

Well, the abortion debate in general hasn't exactly been characterised by an abundance of common sense. Clearly the pro-choice folk don't trust or respect the pro-life folk, and vice versa.

Oh, at this point the cat’s out of the bag, so yeah… But the question is whether the pill caused more abortions and other significant cultural shifts for good and ill.

Prior to the pill, yes, unmarried people/kids still had sex and abortions still occurred
. I’m not that naive… But at much lower rates on both counts. Once the pill became available, the significance of the act of sex was lowered. It started to become more prevalent and started occurring at higher rates. It started to change the cultural mores, even among those that weren’t on the pill. Teen pregnancy and unmarried pregnancy rates started increasing even while birth control became more prevalent.

There are other contraceptive choices available. Not to sound like Captain Woke or anything, but what the pill did was give women control over the means of contraception.

There are, yes. But only the condom predates the pill, and its effectiveness was nowhere near as good as the pill. IUD’s an implants can later, and are more effective, but their development was largely influenced by the effect that the pill had on cultural mores.

It's interesting that even today the condom is the source of puerile humour (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course), unlike the pill or other common methods. Maybe some of that is due to how ridiculous they look.
