Absolutely a trend in the industry. Fine dining is falling by the wayside, but I suspect it is a pendulum and will swing back. It happened here 15 or 20 years ago when the revered Maisonette closed its doors. A sad day.

Fast casual has become very popular which is by and large a lot of mediocre to decent grub cheaper. The trend I really dislike is the push to eliminate servers.

It's a sign of the times in terms of economy, but I think that'll hit mostly in the 'burbs. Small towns and cities will still have plenty of servers, but for different reasons.

I suspect Ax and TG would be big proponents of the Golden Corral model.

The wife and I had dinner at a nice white table cloth Italian restaurant the other night. Place probably seats 70-80 people, although they do have a banquet room (free of charge if you have a party of twenty or more. Extra gratuity is added, though). Food was good, service was excellent and the owner stopped by the table long enough to inquire about the food and whether we had enjoyed our meal.

I left a 20% tip. Was worth every penny.

Yeah, when I go out I want to be waited on. I don't want to stand in line or hit a QR code to order.

This trend predates Biden, although the COVID pressures sure did not help.

Also, the restaurant in question is in Belfast.

Doesn't matter. The trend is here too.

Yeah, we used to have four in town. Now, we have two.

The no-human-interaction model is clearly superior. Wanna know how I know? Because I've been told this time and time again from people who know precisely dick about the restaurant industry.

That's because you see the value in wooey things like human interaction and relationships.

The Italian place in town closed here. They were recovering from COVID but couldn't recover fast enough. The coffee shop almost went out, too; their financing fell through but they were able to work something out.

I was commenting to someone the other day that I no longer know what anything costs at the coffee shop anymore. They always under-charge me, I always tip.* So who knows.

*I spoke with the owner about the tipping screen. That money actually goes to the baristas. I'll walk in there on a Saturday morning when the line's out the door and there's a 20 minute wait for each order, but strangely, my stuff's always ready by the time I get up to order it. I'm sure they all would be doing that if they didn't work for tips, though, because service workers live to make people happy and aren't motivated by money.

                  Please love yourself.

I have no freaking idea. It's just a bloody restaurant closing down. It happens all the time. We might as well start threads about how expensive it is to own a boat.

If Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey can't manage to keep all their places in business, what hope is there for normal folk?
