Yesterday afternoon, we had a 13 year-old black male, GSW to the throat, hit the back doors of the ED with a damn near undiscernible pulse rate and a BP of almost nothing. The old doc working the ED was retired military, with some time spent down in the Sandbox.

The doc is working the rural hospital ED, because A) it give him something to do for a couple of days a week,
    B) it pays ok, not as good as a bigger place, but ok, and C) You see an occasional MVA, but it's mostly old people medicine, minor around home trauma and flu, etc. It ain't balls-to-the-wall busy.

Kid was lucky he had the right doc. Fluids, 2 units of emergency release O neg, stopping the bleeding while the pressure bags are blowing the blood into him. Had him on the chopper to a trauma center in a matter of minutes. Heard this morning the kid is still among the living.

    Sometimes, ya just get lucky...

        I HATED trauma. It's a young man's game.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

And sometimes you get unlucky...Got a call from LOPA late yesterday.

Body's living. Brain, not so much. Time to call the ball.

Sequestered my pre-treatment blood samples, in case they're needed for forensic toxicology...
