What is jazz?

Nowadays for male jazz vocals all we’ve got is Kurt Elling. Gag.
Though there are still some really great women jazz vocalists. Melody Gardot is one who comes to mind. Not quite the same class as Ella, but then the style has changed also.

Yeah, I like her.
But, she doesn't seem to have the artistic breadth that Ella had. A lot of her stuff sounds the same.
For a more traditional style, I like Stacy Kent.

I should have also mentioned Cassandra Wilson and Catherine Russell. I like them as well, especially Wilson’s edginess.
Not familiar at all with Stacy Kent. Will give her a listen.

I’ve never really been a fan of the bebop scat singing. I think that sort of improvising is better when done by horns or a piano. I prefer the Billie Holiday sound. Madeleine Peyroux is worth a listen if you like that type of style
