He's not really giving much evidence for the reasons.
In my equally well-informed opinion, the main reasons movies aren't as popular are Covid, and streaming TV.
The comments to the article are priceless. Apparently Hollywood's demise is all part of a plan.

Only in some of the distribution matters.
Of course, on the other hand the studios have tens of thousands of scripts that were never produced. Plus, let’s face it, 80% of the stuff from Hollywood is rehashed older movies…
Plus, there are thousands of writers out there that aren’t members of SAG. There are also thousands of potential actors out there. Not to mention there is more available media available to stream and watch than ever before. I think SAG has lost a LOT of power..

You know, there's a lot of scripts from 1935-1955 that could be updated very easily. Maybe even by AI.
Maybe a Thin Man remake. The Story of Louis Pasteur. The Road to Glory. Libeled Lady. Lloyd's of London. The General Died at Dawn.
All of those are from 1936. The first a wise-cracking detective/mystery, a biopic, a WW1 flick, a screwball comedy, a period drama and a mercenary drama. I think the first, fourth and last would all scale to today. Two, three and five would require very little in script rewriting.
