    I'm not sure how many black people were in England during the Roman occupation...

    Those who cheered as J-6 American prisoners were locked in solitary for 18 months without trial, now suddenly fight tooth and nail for foreign terrorists’ "due process". — Buck Sexton

      This will make the children wonder what happened to them.

      Obviously they failed, a sad story.

        Shocking that they would misrepresent the skin colour of people living in Roman occupied territories in this way.

        I bet this has never been done with other such areas. Judaea, for example.

        I was only joking

            @Doctor-Phibes

            The Hollow Crown had the wife of Henry VI, Margaret of Anjou, played by the Jewish black actress with a distinct London accent, Sophie Okonedo. Margaret in real life was French and probably would have struggled to understand any English.

            Okonedo despite her accent was superb in the role.

            Elbows up!

                My point was that the people complaining so loudly about how awful all this wokeness is were typically pretty quiet about Jesus being made to look like a honky.

                Google 'Movie portrayals of Jesus', and show me which ones are realistic based on our current knowledge.

                If memory serves, there were more complaints about Santa Claus being depicted as being black, and he's a totally made up person.

                  So, gay and straight characters should only be played by gay and straight actors respectively?

                  Jews should only be played by Jews.

                  Hitler should only be played by Austrians, and so on?

                  There's a reason they call it acting.

                    So's Māui. By that logic, It'd make total sense for Toby McGuire to play him in a Moana live-action. I don't buy into the idea that his being made-up has anything to do with it.

                        And the modern depiction of Santa Claus probably has more to do with the Coca Cola corporation than with his original European persona, which I'd argue is considerably more offensive to the original spirit of Christmas.

                              This whole thing is slightly reminiscent of Laurence Fox complaining that upper-class privately educated English actors are really getting a bum deal nowadays.

                                @Jolly

                                Would not a French actress been a better casting decision?

                                Sara Martins had other commitments at the time and probably recommended Sophie Okonedo given the latter’s impeccable credentials in Shakespearean stage performances.

                                So to answer your question, no it would not have made a better casting decision.

                                  So, gay and straight characters should only be played by gay and straight actors respectively?

                                  Jews should only be played by Jews.

                                  Hitler should only be played by Austrians, and so on?

                                  There's a reason they call it acting.

                                  Actually, there are a lot of people who feel exactly that way and complain loudly when it is not followed.

                                    I do not believe that I have ever heard anybody complain about the fact that somebody playing Adolf Hitler is not an Austrian. Maybe some Austrians are upset by this, however if so they are presumably keeping it to themselves.

                                    I have, however, heard a number of complaints about black people playing hobbits.

                                    But none, oddly, about New Zealanders playing the Uruk Hai.

                                    I was only joking

                                      Well, how about Morgan Freeman playing Hitler?

                                        Well, in "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption," the character of "Red" had red hair and was Irish. So, it could happen.

                                        The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.
