Actually, it's just that his voice is quiet with respect to his piano.
But, speaking of Beethoven, let's look at the first 4 bars of Op 67.

I didn’t really watch the video because I’m too lazy but I believe that I remember in andras schiffs series on the sonatas he said the first movement of the moonlight was a funeral march and should be played at the tempo of steady marching pallbearers and not slow and romantic.
