Back to some of the original points...How much markup do manufacturers get for things like the big screen? Surely, those things can't cost that much...

I have hear a "rule of thumbs" that you take the cost of the parts, and sell if for double that amount.
(Obviously, a lot of variables but that is how I think of the price of something)

I've got that bloody Subaru thing on my car. I hope it lasts.

Phibes, my daughter is looking to buy a new car, she is leaning towards a Subaru Crosstrek. How do you like the gadgetry, is it accurate being camera-based and any issues with anything going on the fritz?
My son's 2018 Audi A5 had a courtesy light that comes on and off out of nowhere, right above the driver's seat. It's in the shop right now being fixed, as the warranty expired while being in the shop (so this time it's paid for). Cost estimate was $800, for one stupid little light which works, but has gone rogue. Crazy.
And, they have had the car for 6 weeks now, while my son gets to drive a Q7 around all this time. They can't figure out why the light is doing what it's doing. There are other issues as well, one of which is blossoming into something Audi owners don't want to hear about as it's a big deal, and expensive to fix. It has reached the point of being a service bulletin, so Audi knows about it and has recommended an expensive and complicated fix. If your Audi is garaged, it might be OK. If your windows steam up whenever it rains, you're doomed. -

I have an Impreza, which I believe is the same chassis as the Crosstrek with a different body shell. It's about 18 months old. We bought it after owning a Forester for about 10 years as we really liked the Subaru. The Forester doesn't have the gadgetry.
I really like the car - I generally switch off the lane-departure gadget which is supposed to keep you in lane, because I don't like it nudging the steering, but the rest of the gadgets are fine. The collision warning alarm thing has gone off a couple of times when somebody in front of me does something stupid, and I actually really appreciated the alert. Occasionally I get a warning that camera visibility is compromised in heavy rain, but it's no big deal. I haven't had any issues so far, touch wood.

Thanks Phibes, that helps a lot! I do want her to have those safety features, as long as they don't end up causing problems even if under warranty.
I had a T-bird years ago that even under warranty, seemed to find its way to the dealer service center once per month for one thing or another. That was frustrating. I want everyone to have a great warranty that is never necessary to use.
