An older friend of mine was married to a Romanian. He was doing work there and met her there. (This was when Premier Ceaușescu was in power). Anyway, he had left the country and was able to get her a visa to leave at a later date. At the airport, the Romanian border police took everything from her (including her engagement ring, luggage, etc) and she left with just the clothes she was wearing. I guess she was considered a traiter because she wanted to leave the country.

Ceausescu’s Romania was the most dismal place of any Warsaw Pact member state. Only marginally better than Hoxha’s Albania or North Korea at the time.
Ceausescu and his wife earned their fate in front of the firing squad when their joint cult of personality, came crashing ignominiously down.
