Biden declares ‘new era’ of partnership with South Korea and Japan
The meeting marked the beginning of what the White House hopes will be an extended stretch of three-way engagement
... President Biden sought to mark a “new era” for one of the United States’ most high-profile trilateral partnerships Friday, using a first-of-its-kind summit with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts at Camp David to announce new measures on defense, technology, education and other key areas of cooperation.

Yes, as mentioned in other forum thread, this has been big news. Historically, Japan and South Korea have not been too good of friends.

I do not think that China understands the "depth" of feelings against them.

I think this is the case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

I'm not sure they care about the world's feelings. If the Chinese economy continues to deteriorate Xi will need feather in his cap, which could be Taiwan. I must admit I have no idea what the Chinese people think about it and whether it would give him a substantial boost.

It probably would. China tightly controls the information the regular citizens see and hear. The majority of people who live there believe most of what the leaders tell them.

When things go bad domestically, best response (in the minds of the leaders) is to focus attention on the outside and blame all the problems on something outside so that people forget (or forgive) what is happening inside.

My reading is that the people in mainland China likes the Koreans but not the Japanese because the Japanese invaded and occupied parts of China in the past. The Koreans also do not like the Japanese for the same reason, but at this point the South Koreans’ fear of the CCP has exceeded their resentment for the Japanese that the South Koreans are now willing to align with the Japanese to defend against the CCP.

The reason I say “CCP” instead of China is because I believe the people of China generally do not want aggression against other nations; but China is not a democracy, China is under the dictatorial control of the CCP. When situations that threaten the rule of the CCP arise, the CCP may try to distract the people from internal problems by acts of aggression against other countries. (Maybe a bit like the people of Russian don’t really want to Ukraine but Vlad would invade Ukraine anyway.)

Press conference by VP Lai after returning from his overseas trip.

"The front-runner to become Taiwan's next president said on Friday that the international community blames the rise in tension across the Taiwan Strait on China rather than on the island, and the reality is Taiwan is already a country."

The above is the impression I am getting also.

"Taiwan’s defense ministry said Saturday that China sent dozens of aircraft and vessels toward the island, just days after the United States approved a $500 million arms sale to Taiwan.

The defense ministry said in a statement that 32 aircraft from the People’s Liberation Army and nine vessels from the navy were detected in the 24 hours between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday.

Of these, 20 aircraft either crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or breached Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. In response, Taiwan tasked its own aircraft, vessels and missile systems to respond to the activities, the defense military said."

Very astute move on our part. I’ve heard China is demanding/expecting a similar meeting with Japan and Korea. I wouldn’t hold my breath.
