How good are the Chinese at research?

It makes sense that they have to do it. Mainland China has to move to making higher value, higher quality products if they want to continue to improve their economy. They have grow their economy previously by making existing things cheaper. But now, other countries are being able to make things even cheaper than mainland China, and with an equivalent quality.
South Korea is a great example of a country that successfully did this.
