My issue with Threads is that it’s completely app based, and the number of permissions that it wants. I’m tempted to get another device for a work account that will be strictly used just for work based social media.

    A good idea, actually.

Meta Blocks Access to its Threads App to EU Users with VPNs

Threads, Meta’s Twitter clone launched to great fanfare last week, crossing 100 million users in just five days. And this happened without Threads officially launching in the EU due to privacy concerns.

Until now, EU users have been able to various use workarounds to get the Threads app on iOS and Android and sign up. For Android users, the APK file to install the Threads app is quite easy to find, while iOS users can create a US-based App Store account to download the app.

Something happened earlier today, though. Threads users in the EU started to notice that the app was no longer working as usual, even when using a VPN. And Meta has now confirmed to TechCrunch that it has taken new measures to block Threads in the EU.

“Threads is not currently available in most countries in Europe and we’ve taken additional steps to prevent people based there from accessing it at this time. Europe continues to be an incredibly important market for Meta and we hope to make Threads available here in the future,” Meta said in a statement.

As of this writing, it appears that EU users can still access their Threads newsfeed. However, users are seeing a “post failed to upload” message when they try to create a new thread. Moreover, checking messages on any profile displays a “content not available message.”

Despite some genuine enthusiasm during its launch week, it appears that Threads is already losing some steam in its second week. According to data from Sensor Tower (via CNBC), Threads saw its number of daily users go down 20% since Saturday, and user time spent on the platform is also down 50%.

Old news. Either they fixed this or workarounds are easy.

100 million in less than a week.

This is exactly like the Snowden bullshit. Everyone's so busy condemning the thing they don't like, they don't even know what the thing they don't like actually implies.

I don't know anything about it really. I'll wait to see where it goes. Really don't use Twitter or Instagram either.

You all are getting your information not by being on the platform, but by reading about it online. Which, c'mon man. 😄

In general terms, it's interesting to me they're trying to integrate platforms, which I don't think is going away anytime soon. It's a total guess of mine, but I think we're going to see more attempts at that. It's beneficial both to users and in the social media companies who harvest user data. Especially interesting is how Threads is influencing Instagram and vice versa. There's a lot of back and forth.

In specific terms, I see more activity on the platform every day. My experience is completely contrary to these articles, but there are specific reasons for that and I think my experience is very much an outlier. I have no doubt there was a lot of initial interest that's starting to wane.

                                    https://archive.is/8cO4F

For a second week in a row, the number of daily active users declined on Threads, falling to 13 million, down about 70% from a July 7 peak, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The average time users spend on the iOS and Android apps has also decreased to four minutes from 19 minutes. The average time spent for Android users in the U.S. dropped to five minutes from a peak of 21 minutes on launch day, according to SimilarWeb, a digital data and analytics company.
Twitter’s daily active users remain steady at about 200 million, and average time spent is at 30 minutes a day, according to Sensor Tower estimates.
Meta executives have said they expected an eventual decline after the app gained more than 100 million sign-ups within a week of its launching earlier this month. They have signaled that they don’t see the falloff as worrisome and have said they are working on additional features. Meta aims to increase the number of users and improve the experience before trying to monetize the platform.
