A lot of the world's navies deploy frigates. They're versatile, cheaper to build and cheaper to operate. Today's frigate is probably pretty close in tonnage to a WW2 destroyer.
In comparison, an Arleigh Burke class destroyer weighs what a WW2 cruiser weighed.
Both frigate and destroyer could probably destroy a WW2 era cruiser before they knew what hit them...
