This new populist strain of the GOP is just as spend-happy as Dems now, and is play acting conservatism in this instance for the theater of it.

I'd love a smaller government. But in this instance? No.
I think the risk of brinksmanship on the creditworthiness of the United States and is not worth any modest spending "wins" that'll be achieved for theatre.

I'm not in the mood for idiocy. And this is shear idiocy. In politics, you take what you can get, when you can get it. Right now, leverage exists in order to wrangle some spending cuts. Nail Biden's hide to the wall and get your cuts.

Oh, but in the first reign of the Sun King a shadow was cast on the Eastern-most sundial kinda stuff. Water under the bridge. Sound and fury, signifying nothing. This is politics and it plays by its own rules.
People (mostly Dems) didn't understand when Trump threw off the remark the other night about leverage over the default. What he was saying, is that it's politics and you take advantage of your negotiating positions.
