We're here till my spouse retires. That should be in about 5 years, but health issues could make that happen sooner. We live in a suburb adjacent to Chicago. But clearly, there's no iron border, and 85% of the crime in our town is from Chicagoans who make a quick exist back to the west side of Chicago.

As I've been in the house for 30 years, I'm pretty settled in - know the neighbors and enjoy things - but I wouldn't mind paying less tax and feeling safer.

As for my Chicago friends, I suspect there will be a bigger exodus now. Twenty years ago, it looked like Chicago might make a comeback when Daley Jr took over - but he stayed too long and did made some stupid moves that may have set the city back.

          Barbara Ransby

Barbara Ransby (born May 12, 1957) is a writer, historian, professor, and activist.[2][3] She is an elected fellow of the Society of American Historians,[4][5] and holds the John D. MacArthur Chair at the University of Illinois at Chicago.[6]

Ransby attended Columbia University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1984,[7] and completed her master's degree and PhD at the University of Michigan.[3] In 1996, she joined the faculty of University of Illinois at Chicago, where she is professor of Black Studies and Gender and Women's Studies at the university.[8][4] Ransby was elected president of the National Women's Studies Association for a two-year term, which began in November 2016.[9][10] She is an historian of the Movement for Black Lives.[11]

Ransby's academic work has featured biographies of 20th-century black women activists Ella Baker and Eslanda Robeson. In contemporary politics, she has been executive director of a non-profit organization.[1] Her daughter Asha Rosa Ransby-Sporn is as of 2021 a national organizing co-chair of the non-profit youth organization BYP100.[12][13]

In 1995, Ransby, together with other black feminists including Angela Davis, Evelynn Hammonds and Kimberlé Crenshaw, formed an alliance called the African American Agenda 2000 to oppose Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March, out of concern that it would further black male sexism.[

So racist that the city elected (checks notes....) a Black mayor - again.

Oh, no. She's look like a member of the John Birch Society compared to Brandon (no, not that Brandon). Remember, she was a federal prosecutor. One has to wonder why, considering her role in the past, she acted the way she did. Was she beholden to someone?

Silly me...it's Chinatown Chicago, Jake Mik.

She did a terrible job as mayor from what I have read and heard.

Imagine, a policitican blaming outside forces for losing the election rather than accepting responsibility.

The first woman to be elected mayor of Chicago was Jane Byrne. She served as the city's mayor from 1979 to 1983.

The first black mayor of Chicago was Harold Washington. He was elected in 1983 and served until his death in 1987.

Disgusting. It's such chaos going to events, with the parking. I recently experienced it at the Rodeo in Houston. I can imagine enterprising scammers taking advantage.

                                    Education is extremely important.

                                      In his inaugural speech:

"The tears of Adam Toledo’s parents are made of the same sorrow of Officer Preston’s parents," Johnson said. "To the family of Officer Preston, my heart is with you."

Adam Toledo was a 13 year old gangbanger who was shot by police after dropping his gun while running away from police.

Body cam footage of Toledo's shooting, released on April 15, 2021, showed that Toledo was unarmed at the moment he was shot. The video shows officer Stillman chasing Toledo into the alleyway and yelling at him to stop.[44][47] Toledo slows down and stops as Stillman catches up to him.[44][47] In footage taken from another angle, Toledo appears to throw a pistol behind a fence just before turning to face the officer (body cam footage shows a pistol being recovered behind the fence two minutes after the shooting).[44][45] Stillman yells "Show me your fucking hands" and "drop it" while flashing a strobe flashlight at him.[44] Toledo turns around with his empty hands in the air, and Stillman then shoots Toledo as he does so.

According to the CPD, there were 838 milliseconds (0.838 or 5⁄6 of a second) "between gun shown in hand and single shot".

Areanah Preston was an off-duty Chicago cop who was shot and killed by 4 kids (youngest 16, iirc) while on the way home from her shift.

Officer Preston, who has just returned home in uniform after her shift, is fatally shot standing in front of her home in the 8100 block of South Blackstone. Video surveillance from the scene shows the suspects running towards Preston and "muzzle flashes" from at least two guns. After she was shot, one of the suspects ran back and took Preston's gun. That gun has not been recovered. Frazier told investigators that all four of them were armed.

One of these things is not like the other.
